Also covered are air actions throughout the war in India, naval aircraft co-operation in 1918 in home waters and in the Mediterranean, and the Allied offensives on the Western Front leading to final victory in November 1918.

Official histories provide historians with a clear, unambiguous and detailed account of reported events. Given the interest expected in the First World War in 2014 this book provides a reminder that the Great War defined the roles air power was to deliver in subsequent conflicts. Its analysis of the creation of the Royal Air Force, the first truly independent air force in the World, in 1918 and the Independent Bombing Force is neatly presented in the context of the major Campaigns of that stage of the War. The breadth of this volume is remarkable, spanning Palestine, Mesopotamia, Persia and India, Italy, Macedonia and the Western Front.Jones's analysis of the impact of air power on the final battles is fascinating. After victory the scramble to explain away the impact of ground attack was seen as necessary by career RAF officers including Slessor, to ensure the continued independence of the Royal Air Force, so this volume provides graphic examples of the influence and effect the Allied dominance over the battlefield played in the minds of the German leadership and their soldiers on the ground. Highly recommended.
