I got a delivery of 45 baby chicks during the polar vortex. Because they were shipped express with heating pads, all of them survived. However they could not go outside with the other free range chickens. Even our mature free range chickens were choosing to stay inside their coop under heat lamps. (The snow was deeper than the chickens were tall.)I set up an Intex 8' X 18" Sun Fish Snapset Pool in our basement. I lined the pool with newspapers, put in a tripod hanging heat lamp and added feeders and waterers. All was fine--until the extreme cold, snowy weather went on and on. We got snow up to the beginning of spring. The chicks had to stay in my basement a month longer than expected. They got bigger and wanted to fly. I added netting over the whole thing so that they could not fly out of the pool and run around our basement. Eventually the chicks got larger. While adolescent chickens are quite charming if they are outside in your free range area, they can be quite stinky in your basement even if you clean their space regularly. When the smell of chicken droppings began to drift up from the basement into our kitchen, my husband and kids told me that I needed to do something about the basement chickens. I was able to put them under heat lamps in an outside area. I scrubbed the basement floor and dusted the area. My son insisted on wearing a gas mask and respirator while he helped me clean. I just used a handkerchief over my mouth. After our cleaning, the smell improved but there was still a distinct air of "chicken" in my basement. I ordered a large amount of Febreze and sprayed all over the basement. It was amazing how well it worked! Within a short while, you would not have known that 45 adolescent chickens had recently called our basement their home.
