Product Description

"This book is a record of observations made during those two years (1917-1919), and is concerned chiefly with aviation training. It is hoped that it will be of interest to those who were in the Air Service and their friends, besides being of assistance to future students of military aeronautics. To many of the pilots it may explain the reasons for some of the sufferings which they endured. It may also serve as a warning of the evil of unpreparedness. Nearly all of the errors, mistakes, and delays to which it refers might have been avoided, had the American people insisted on having their representatives in Congress make suitable preparation for an adequate army and a wee-equipped Air Service in the event of our being thrown into the World War." This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context.

Written fairly soon after WW I by Hiram Bingham describes the development of the Army aviation training system in the U.S. and the deploymenty to France in some detail. Though not fundamentally technical it provides a decent insight into the organization, evolution, methods and equipment used in the U.S .and France that Bingham was involved with.It is a product of it's time and the style will be familiar to anyone who has read Teddy Rosevelt's Rough Riders and other writing of the general period. It does a lot of name naming ( or dropping) and I suspect there are things left out that do not paint Bingham and others in a favorable light, but it is by no means not factual. In earlier life Bingham was the South American explorer who found Machu Pichu (though this was apparantly news to people living in the area, who didn't knoiw it was lost) and as senator from Connecticut saw nothing wrong apparantly with a rather cozy relationship with some constituents. File is well presented and edited and plays very well on the Kindle with pictures near the text referring to it, very few typographical errors. For people interested in WW I aviation history specifically and U.S .military or aviation history ion general worthwhile to read and good value for money.
