From the 50s to the 80s, the Strategic Air Command was the keystone of the American nuclear deterrent and its primary arm for waging nuclear war. This is the official US Air Force history of the SAC, covering the years from the end of World War Two to the mid-1950s when the Cold War reached its peak, and SAC grew from a tiny force with just a few nuclear weapons into the most powerful military organization in the world. Illustrated.
I grew up on SAC bases beginning in1952-65) with the B-36D (Travis AFB) and progressing through the B-47E (MacDill AFB), & B-52G (Seymour-Johnson AFB & Eglin AFB)and then spent my own 24 plus year AF career in SAC in ICBMS (Minot AFB & Grand Forks AFB). Great history of a bygone era that brings back memories and helps me understand some of the things my Dad had to deal with.
